Ridge - Research Campus Expansion - HDR
I prefer winter and fall when you feel the bone structure of the landscape. Something waits beneath it; the whole story doesn’t show. -- Andrew Wyeth
The building remains low and stretches and bends across the landscape to take advantage of views and make places for gathering. The weathered steel shading devices and colored frit of the façade fuse with the surrounding nature and capture the gradual flow and color tone of the oxidation occurring on cliff faces and rusting metal of the mills along the river below. Hundreds of studies of each orientation of the building facades were conducted to optimize the depth and density of these elements to control for daylighting, glare and peak solar loads. A large solar array on the main roof helps offset energy use.
Jury Comments:
This project embraces the site’s full potential. The building program reaches far beyond what is initially expected, invites nature close to it’s users by creating various outdoor and indoor spaces taking on a united design theme. The jury appreciated the overall project approach, it’s clear concept, and beautiful delivery.
