The John Stewardson Memorial Fellowship in Architecture is a long-standing initiative dedicated to nurturing connection, shared learning, and mutual support within the architectural community. Established more than a century ago, the fellowship was founded not as a static memorial, but as a living commitment to encouraging the study and practice of architecture through relationships—between students, educators, and professionals.
Conceived by early architectural leaders who sought to honor their colleague John Stewardson, the fellowship has always prioritized people over objects, and collaboration over commemoration. Its purpose was, and remains, to strengthen bonds across generations of architects and to cultivate a culture of learning grounded in generosity and exchange.
Today, the fellowship continues to evolve. This marks the second consecutive year that the John Stewardson Memorial Fellowship is being offered through a collaboration between the American Institute of Architects – Philadelphia Chapter and the Community Design Collaborative. Together, these organizations are stewarding a renewed vision of the fellowship—one that responds to contemporary conditions while remaining rooted in its original spirit of fellowship.
This year, in its 121st edition, the John Stewardson Memorial Fellowship in Architecture, CDC and AIA, announces the 2026 design competition, Grounds for Debate, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the United States.
