DIGroup Architecture to Design New Montclair Veterans Service Center

Montclair, NJ (March 25, 2026) – DIGroup Architecture (DIG) and James L. Evers, RA (JLE) are collaborating to design the new Montclair Veterans Service Center, a transformative redevelopment of American Legion Crawford Crews Post 251 that will provide supportive housing and vital resources for homeless, at-risk and aging veterans. 

On any given night in New Jersey, more than 1,100 veterans experience homelessness, including those in Essex County. The Montclair Veterans Service Center is part of a broader statewide effort led by the American Legion to reduce veteran homelessness by rebuilding posts and integrating permanent supportive housing into their mission. 

DIG's design will replace the current, deteriorating structure at 210 Bloomfield Ave. with a thoughtfully planned, multi-story facility that honors the legacy of Post 251 while creating modern, dignified housing for veterans. The project will include 11 supportive units along with space dedicated to community engagement, education and veteran services. 

“Through DIG's Architecture for Change lens, we are evolving the traditional American Legion model into a forward-thinking sanctuary,” said Principal Scott Hoffman, “By integrating high-quality supportive housing units with dedicated resource spaces, we are creating a holistic environment that honors the service of our veterans while providing the modern tools they need for a successful post-service transition.” 

Founded in 1935, Crawford Crews Post 251 has long served as a pillar of the Montclair community. Named after Crawford Crews – one of four African-American Montclair residents that included Pvt. Alonzo Mills, Corp. Benjamin E. Smith and Corp. Austin Barnes who served with distinction in the Harlem Hellfighters during World War I – the post has donated land for schools, provided emergency shelter during times of crisis, hosted community events and served as a meeting place for African-American veterans, including Tuskegee Airmen. 

Before becoming the home of Post 251, the circa-1887 Italian Renaissance-style landmark served the community as Washington Hose Company No. 3. DIG is now working to preserve its storied past by incorporating original elements, such as its signature stonework, into the new design. The building's legacy will be further honored through detailed documentation and a commemorative plaque on its exterior.      

The design approach reflects both preservation and progress. While the existing structure has fallen into disrepair, the new facility will honor the Post's history through intentional architectural references while delivering safe, accessible and energy-efficient housing that meets today's standards.

The project team has already secured key approvals and partnerships, including historic preservation review, state-level regulatory approvals, supportive services collaboration with Soldier On, guidance from Monarch Housing Associates, support from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and pre-development funding from the State of New Jersey. 

Once completed, the Montclair Veterans Service Center will embody Post 251's long-standing motto “Where Service Still Lives” by continuing its legacy of community support while expanding its impact to address one of New Jersey's most urgent challenges: veteran homelessness. Project leaders are currently advancing zoning approvals and housing voucher allocations to begin construction.

About James Evers, RA 
James Evers, RA, is an architect whose work has long focused on housing solutions for vulnerable populations. His senior thesis at Syracuse University's School of Architecture explored the design of a shelter for homeless men, an idea his advisor encouraged him to pursue. More than four decades later, that focus continues to inform his work. 

A member of the Sons of the American Legion, Evers is currently collaborating with former classmate Vince Myers, president of DIGroup Architecture, serving as design architect on projects to develop housing for homeless veterans on American Legion properties in Montclair and Gloucester City, N.J.
