Long Branch Officials & Community Members Celebrate the Re-opening of Long Branch Public Library

Long Branch, NJ (February 26, 2025) – The Long Branch Free Public Library marked a new chapter in its storied history with a recently held open-to-the-public ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Main Library, featuring a blend of historic restoration and modern upgrades designed by DIGroup Architecture (DIG). The event included guided tours, entertainment, complimentary refreshments and commemorative gifts for new library cardholders.

The Long Branch Free Public Library's transformation showcases thoughtful Carnegie-era design elements that honor its heritage while enhancing its functionality. Officially opened in 1920, the library is believed to be the last Carnegie library built with funds awarded by Andrew Carnegie and the Carnegie Foundation. The Long Branch Free Public Library is one of three Carnegie-era library built-heritage renovation projects involving DIG. Two others are in Philadelphia, where the firm established an office six years ago.

“Libraries are the heartbeat of the community, and this project was about more than restoring a building – it was about reviving a legacy,” said Rich Alderiso, DIG co-founding principal who is serving as the Long Branch Free Public Library's keynote speaker next month at its Celebration of Champions benefit. “Our goal was to preserve the library's architectural integrity while ensuring it continues to inspire and serve all who walk through its doors.”

To achieve the vision of library leaders and the community, DIG reimagined the local history collections room; children's library with a dedicated teen library; re-designed circulation hub; and flexible community areas. DIG created a custom display case enclosure to house Long Branch's rich historical archives, ensuring they remain protected while still visible to visitors.

Other notable new features include an arched glass entryway window, a nod to the classic Carnegie design; restored and new indoor columns accentuating the original ceiling; a newly elevated ceiling revealing historic Carnegie windows; and a traditional color palette infused with Long Branch's signature green hues. The transition from fluorescent to pendulum lighting in key areas adds a timeless sophistication reflective of the library's historic roots.

Located at 328 Broadway in Long Branch, the newly renovated library marks a new chapter of fulfilling its mission as a hub for learning, connection and progress in a space that blends history with modern innovation.
