Congratulations to ALMA architecture llc on winning a Merit Award + Citation for Equitable Communities for their Golaski Flats project.

The project is located in one of the designated Federal Opportunity Zones and is being funded by new market tax credits and a crowd funding platform to help encourage small local investment.

Walter Golaski (1913-1996), Golaski Flat’s namesake, was a Polish-American Mechanical Biomedical Engineer and inventor. The most important invention of his was the closeknit dacron vascular graft, a major improvement to the market that allowed patients longer life expectancies. These grafts were produced and manufactured at Golaski Laboratories at the current site of Golaski Flats. [Jacob Downs’s Essay, Hidden City]

Trying to make a significant impact to the neighborhood and at the same time have the project “pencil out” it was necessary to balance the following: creating common spaces, preserving existing space, and maximizing the number of residential units.
