Design Award Winners |
Congratulations to Phenotype Architects on winning a Merit Award for their Louis Sauer Townhouse Renovation project.
The story of this project begins in the late 1960’s when, like in many other American cities at the time, urban planners and developers in Philadelphia were looking to attract people to the city by offering affordable housing and convenient amenities. The architect Louis Sauer’s work during that time, particularly in the Society Hill neighborhood, became an innovative model for how to design and deliver high-quality, high-density, low-rise housing in a package of clean and functional modern design.
At the core of the renovation are a few key planning moves. Removing a structural wall separating the kitchen and dining and a partial wall limiting views between the split levels allows for interconnectivity between kitchen, dining, and living spaces and offers expansive views and abundant light afforded by Sauer’s original façade.
A close collaboration between the owners, design team, and crafts people has yielded a home that follows up on the demands of urban housing originally addressed by Louis Sauer in the 1960’s and successfully delivers on project’s defining prompt - the creation of a unique modern home that is open, inviting, beautiful, and efficient.
