The Independence Seaport Museum, located along the Delaware River at Penn’s Landing, invites visitors of all ages to discover Philadelphia’s maritime history. With water as the unifying thread, stories of those who lived and worked along the city’s regional waterways come to life through a diverse collection of interactive experiences. This project was proposed to create a new entrance and visitor experience on the south side of the existing building. The under-construction Park at Penn’s Landing I-95 Cap will restrict visual access to the museum’s current entrance. The new gateway, which faces the marina, includes an inviting lobby with a ticketing area adjacent to the Boat Building Shop. The design of the new doors, vestibule and lobby strives to fit seamlessly within the existing museum, building language, scale and footprint while transforming the visitor experience to engage more directly with the Delaware River.
