O'Donnell & Naccarato Celebrates Groundbreaking of Cooper University Health Care Expansion in Camden

The 335,000 square foot patient tower and pedestrian bridge mark the beginning of a multi-phase plan to grow Cooper's campus

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – O'Donnell & Naccarato (O&N), a leading structural engineering firm specializing in innovative and client-focused design solutions, celebrated the groundbreaking on the first phase of a planned $3 billion expansion to Cooper University Health Care in Camden.

O&N will provide structural engineering services for the construction of a 10-story, 335,000 square foot patient tower (Tower A), which will enhance Cooper's operational capacity and serve as a link to the campus' existing facilities. This state-of-the-art building will tie directly into the neighboring Roberts and Kelemen Pavilions and directly connect to the MD Anderson Cancer Center via a new pedestrian bridge spanning over Hadden Avenue.

The project will also position Cooper for future expansion, with critical upgrades to its Central Utility Plant and a new below-grade basement that will provide mechanical and other back-of-house support to the main hospital.

“We are thrilled to partner with Cooper University Health Care on this unprecedented expansion of their Camden campus,” said Michael Herrmann, Vice President of O&N. “This project is a testament to the collaboration of our trusted project partners, as we work to deliver a cutting-edge facility that will significantly enhance healthcare services in Camden. As a crucial hub for Cooper's campus, the new patient tower is serving as a centerpiece for Cooper's vision of innovation and growth.”

O&N is working alongside owner's representative Hammes, as well as project partners HKS Architects and Array Architects, MEP engineers BR+A Consulting Engineers and Highland Associates, construction managers Torcon Inc. and P. Agnes Inc., and civil and geotechnical engineer Langan. Minority-owned Dessin Solutions is serving as BIM subconsultant to O&N.

Tower A will utilize a composite concrete slab on a metal deck floor system, supported on wide flange steel beams and girders spanning wide-flange steel columns. A combination of steel-braced frames and moment frames comprise the building's lateral load resisting system. The building superstructure will be founded on a deep foundation system, consisting of auger cast piles and micropiles supporting reinforced concrete pile caps and grade beams.Large pile supported mat foundations will support the building lateral system cores.

The O&N project team includes Principal Kyle Terry, and Senior Project Manager Alexandra Little.

A longtime partner of Cooper, O&N has supported the construction of multiple health system projects throughout New Jersey, including the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, Cooper Moorestown Ambulatory Care Facility, and Cooper University Parking Garage, among many others. The firm has also been integral to efforts aimed at redeveloping downtown Camden, providing structural engineering services on over 300 projects including the Triad Building, Subaru Headquarters, Holtec, and Hilton Garden Inn.
