Investigating and Advocating for Philadelphia's Public Realm

Urban Design Committee strives to elevate urgent issues related to the built environment beyond the building scale.

In 2023, we ran a book club starting with Managing the Climate Crisis by Matthijs Bouw and Jonathan Barnett. Sign up to attend here! Urban Design Committee Book Club | Calendar | AIA Philadelphia

In 2023, we also highlighted advocacy around Chinatown, the broader work going into urban resiliency outside of the architectural realm, and continue our partnership with COTE Environmental Justice subcommittee.

In 2022, we joined forces with COTE Environmental Justice subcommittee to put forth a series of presentations featuring redlining, gentrification, urban heat island effect, spatial equity, and mitigation strategies. You can find short write-ups in the "Committee News" section.

After the success of our 2021 BLACK ARCHITECTS / DESIGNERS / ARTISTS OF PHILLY bike tour, we organized another ride for 2022, the ASIAN ARCHITECTS / DESIGNERS / ARTISTS OF PHILLY bike tour. Both are collaborations with many members of AIA Philadelphia, as well as Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia. You can see the blog entries of our new series on Asian architects / designers / artists in our “Committee News” section.
