 Perched above the wooded Byberry Creek in Philadelphia, the Mod Creek Encosta Residence is the result of an eight-year journey of design, trust, and architectural ambition. This home represents direct visual access to nature and the ability to be one with it. The project began in 2016 when the landowner approached the architect with a simple one-story sketch for a home on this extraordinary site at 9811 Berea Street. Recognizing the rare beauty and potential of the property, the architect encouraged the client to set aside the initial concept and instead imagine a home worthy of its dramatic setting—one that could extend outward and hover above the creek itself. 

From that moment forward, the residence evolved into a striking modern composition of clean lines, bold cantilevers, and expansive glazing. The exterior’s dark horizontal cladding contrasts sharply with the surrounding trees and snow-covered landscape, allowing the structure to feel both grounded and sculptural. Large floor-to-ceiling windows invite the outdoors in, framing seasonal views and filling the interior with natural light. 

Inside, the home is defined by openness and vertical connection. A soaring central atrium, floating stair, and glass railings create a sense of transparency and flow across multiple levels. Minimalist finishes—marble-patterned floors, warm wood accents, and carefully curated lighting—balance modern luxury with comfort. Spaces for gathering, entertaining, and quiet retreat unfold throughout the home, always oriented toward the creek below. 

Completed in 2024, the Mod Creek Encosta Residence stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful collaboration and long-term vision.
