This presentation will explore some of the challenges and benefits of using drones to evaluate, observe, and document historic buildings. We will look at regulations, drone hardware, planning drone flights around historic buildings, and expectations for the flight results. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Understand the basic FAA requirements for commercial drone use
  2. Describe the capabilities and limitations of drone photography and available equipment.
  3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using a drone to access historic buildings
  4. Look at a variety of examples that include interesting challenges to typical building access

Meet the Speaker

Michael Falstad

During his more than 20 years in architecture, design, planning and preservation, Michael has worked on a diversity of buildings throughout the U.S. mid-Atlantic region. He’s known in particular for his effectiveness in assessing building enclosures to identify sources of air and water infiltration, and also for his insightful guidance on repairs that are architecturally appropriate and environmentally sound. Michael is experienced in all phases of project implementation – from conceptual design through construction documents and construction administration. His background includes work in both restoration carpentry and community revitalization; his work in each field contributed to his conviction that maintaining and enhancing existing buildings can deliver a range of meaningful benefits.
