After more than 35 years at Langan as a recognized geotechnical engineering leader in the A/E/C industry, Dr. John McElroy, lead Geotechnical Engineer in Langan's Philadelphia office, has retired.
John earned his BSCE in Civil Engineering, MSCE and PhD in Geotechnical Engineering at Drexel University. He first worked at Langan's New Jersey headquarters and then moved to Langan's Philadelphia office when it opened in 1998. He worked on some of our most significant projects in and around greater Philadelphia, including Penn Medicine's Patient Pavilion, the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, and several projects at Temple University, St. Joseph's University, and the University of Pennsylvania.
John was responsible for the design, instrumentation, monitoring, and evaluation of shallow, deep, and mat foundation systems, earth-retention systems, soil-improvement techniques, geosynthetic installations, and soil and rock anchors. He managed field engineers and provided construction inspection services involving excavation support, subgrade preparation and soil improvement for shallow foundation support, pile driving, and drilled-pier installation.
Throughout his career, John was a trusted leader and mentor to Langan's staff and a respected and steadfast advisor to Langan's clients. He was generous with his time, experience, and insights. A long-time member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, he most recently served as the Board Secretary of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, Philadelphia Chapter.
Away from Langan, John is a runner, hiker, cyclist, and avid birdwatcher. From all of us at Langan: may the wind be always at your back and the sun warm upon your face.
