Join us for an AIA Technology and Innovation tour of the Polyhedral Structures Laboratory (PSL) at UPenn's Pennovation Center. Prof. Masoud Akbarzadeh and Ryan Welch (KieranTimberlake) will walk us through the lab's ARPA-E funded research: a robotically 3D-printed, post-tensioned concrete floor system designed to absorb carbon. Compared to conventional slabs, the structure achieves over 50% concrete reduction and 90% less steel reinforcement — all fabricated without formwork using modular assembly.
You'll see firsthand how 3D graphic statics, carbon-sequestering concrete mixes, triply periodic minimal surfaces, and formwork-free robotic fabrication are converging to reshape how we build. The tour covers structural design, carbon-absorbing materials, operational energy performance, digital fabrication workflows, and lifecycle carbon assessment — with LU and HSW credits available.
