Sustainability is often associated with advanced technologies, certifications, and dedicated project goals. Yet some of the most impactful strategies are embedded in the everyday decisions architects, engineers, contractors, and consultants make throughout the design and construction process.
Join the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) 2030 Working Group for a multidisciplinary panel discussion exploring the "under the radar" approaches that improve building performance, reduce waste, lower embodied and operational carbon, and support long-term resilience without adding cost or requiring major changes to project scope. From passive design and system right-sizing to efficient structural solutions, construction practices, and coordination strategies, panelists will share practical lessons that can be applied immediately to projects of any scale.
Through a series of lightning talks followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A, attendees will gain insight into how sustainability can become a default part of good design practice rather than an added feature. The conversation will highlight overlooked opportunities, common points where sustainable intentions break down, and actionable strategies professionals can implement on their very next project. Panelists:
Andrew Ferrarelli, AIA, LEED AP BD+C | Principal, SITIO Architecture + Urban Design
Maggie Deatrick, PE, LEED AP BD+C | Assistant Mechanical Department Manager, Bala Consulting Engineers
Denise Richards, PE | Partner, Keast & Hood Structural Engineers
