As the building sector continues to contribute over 40% of global carbon emissions, retrofitting existing structures—particularly affordable housing—is a critical strategy for advancing health, safety, and sustainability. This presentation explores how deep energy exterior retrofits can dramatically improve building performance, resident well-being, and climate resilience. Drawing on real-world projects in the greater Boston area, Onion Flats Architecture shares insights from affordable housing developments at varying stages of retrofit, each shaped by a unique combination of building typology, policy mandates, and funding incentives. The session will explore how integrated envelope upgrades, electrification, and ventilation improvements can result in healthier indoor environments, reduced energy burdens, and more resilient housing. Attendees will gain practical knowledge on navigating technical challenges, stakeholder coordination, and scalable strategies to advance equitable, low-carbon transformations in existing buildings—especially relevant for communities preparing for new energy codes and increased climate-related risks.
