Forum Tour: Navy Yard Redevelopment: Innovation in a Mixed-use Campus
Navy Yard, multiple locations, Philadelphia
Friday 11 Nov 2022
11:15 AM - 1:15 PM
11 Nov 2022 11:15 AM - 1:15 PM
The redevelopment of Philadelphia’s 1,200 acre The Navy Yard has created one of the region’s most important planned developments of Live, Work, Play within the city. A growing collection of architecturally significant commercial buildings and parks illustrates compelling design strategies for integrating large-scale, mixed-use buildings in pedestrian, human-centered, and ecologically-challenging environments. As the next phase of development kicks into gear, the campus will see the shift of emphasis to mixed-use residential and hospitality buildings. This multi-modal tour will begin with an overall look at the larger context of the Navy Yard by trolly and transition to a walking tour that focuses on a range of parks and buildings that illustrate the challenges and successes of a true mixed-use campus with a commitment to sustainability and design innovation.
Projects featured in depth will include: office buildings (3 Crescent Drive-EM & 150 Rouse/FS Investments-DIGSAU), life/science & research labs (Axalta-EM & Adaptimmune/WuXi AppTec/Iovance-DIGSAU), hospitality (Marriott-EM), and upcoming Chapel Block multi-family residential (DIGSAU).
Learning Objectives:
Illustrate compelling design strategies for integrating large-scale, mixed-use buildings in pedestrian, human-centered environments.
Understand the process, outcomes, challenges, and successes of the original Navy Yard Master Plan.
Review how the updated Navy Yard Master Plan transitions from primarily a commercial development to a large-scale urban redevelopment that is enhanced by residential development.
Identify attainable sustainable design and construction strategies that were effectively incorporated into a suite of new LEED-certified educational, research, and office facilities.
