21 Oct 2025 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Join the Building Enclosure Council for lunch and a panel discussion on Tuesday, October 21.
The pre-construction meeting is one of the most valuable opportunities for architects and contractors to align before work begins on site. When approached with the right mindset, it can transform project documents into a framework for open dialogue—clarifying expectations, surfacing challenges, and setting the stage for a smoother construction process. In today’s environment of accelerated schedules and increasingly complex requirements, pre-construction meetings play a critical role in bridging the gap between design intent and construction execution. While no drawing set can anticipate every condition, these meetings create the space for proactive conversation, trust-building, and mutual understanding. This panel will bring together architects and contractors to share perspectives on how to make pre-construction meetings more effective. Discussion topics will include: How architects can communicate design intent while acknowledging the limits of documentation What contractors most need from these early conversations to anticipate field challenges Techniques for avoiding adversarial dynamics and fostering collaboration Real-world examples where a well-run pre-construction meeting prevented downstream problems By surfacing both sides of the conversation, this session aims to demystify the pre-construction meeting and highlight practical strategies for improving outcomes. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how to structure these meetings, what questions to ask, and how to use this time to strengthen the architect–contractor relationship.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how to design a resilient and durable flashing system that will minimize life cycle costs
2. Identify common challenges of shotcrete installation and their impact on waterproofing.
3. Learn best practices for sequencing and coordination to ensure continuity of membranes.
4. Apply combined design and installation insights to mitigate leaks and long-term failures.
