Join the AIA Philadelphia Historic Preservation Committee and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Philadelphia Chapter for a virtual discussion of British architectural preservation, presented by Matthew Slocombe, Director of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).
Topics to be discussed are the following:
SPAB’s involvement in the birth of the conservation movement/SPAB’s history, ideas and people (looking at Victorian ‘restoration’, the case that pushed William Morris to start SPAB)
SPAB’s modern conservation philosophy: maintenance, understanding your building, context and continuity, respect for age, repair not restoration
Fitting new to old: good modern design in the context of old buildings
