You're invited to join the AIA Philadelphia Committee on the Environment to learn more about the 2030 Commitment, to share knowledge, and to improve practice. Architects have an important role to play in addressing the climate crisis. In Philadelphia, buildings alone contribute to more than 70% of the city's greenhouse gas emissions. We are proud to offer another engaging workshop in a series of workshops on embodied carbon.
Join us to hear from Ian Smith (Ian Smith Design Group), Rob Fleming (Director of Sustainability at FCA) and Mary Holland (Principal at Cicada Architecture + Planning) in the session titled 'Adaptive Reuse- Stories from the trenches' on July 11th at 5 PM. The goal of this session will be to provoke and inspire action from peers, clients, stakeholders by Unpacking the complexity of embodied and operational carbon in order to do the best we can to uphold our HSW oath as architects. The panel will begin with Rob Fleming, providing the overall context and framing for embodied carbon, operational carbon, total carbon and adaptive reuse through the proposition of Preservation Sustainability. Ian Smith will share his stories of adaptive reuse as he expands and broadens the definition of sustainable design and adaptive reuse, through a less hierarchical, common sense approach. Mary Holland will tell stories of three very different buildings, the challenges to adaptive reuse they presented, and solutions developed through involvement of the buildings’ stakeholders. Spanning a period of less than a decade, they illustrate changing goals on the part of clients about the first cost vs. long term cost vs. long term environmental responsibility debate. Further, these projects illustrate the resilience and value of difficult, quirky buildings. The session will end with a guided, robust discussion.
