The building sector accounts for 40% of annual GHG emissions, and embodied carbon will constitute the majority of emissions from new construction through 2040 (Architecture2030). In this talk, architects will learn how to reduce emissions on their projects using environmental life cycle assessment (LCA). We will introduce basic LCA terminology and modeling principles as they apply to a design context, and we will offer strategies to evaluate building systems and materials with a particular focus on building envelopes.
