This event will raise money specifically for our K-12 programs and for our Summer JADE Fellowship for undergraduate design students.
Our K-12 Programs
Supporting DesignPhiladelphia's K-12 programming, fosters the next generation of diverse, multidisciplinary designers and builders. We offer multiple delivery methods of design education: in-classroom programs, workshops at 1218 Arch Street, career days at schools, and partnerships with other organizations. Your sponsorship will enable us to expand and enhance these offerings, giving more students access to hands-on design and building experiences that will inspire their future careers.
Our Summer College Fellowship (JADE Fellowship)
DesignPhiladelphia runs the JADE (Justice Alliance in Design Education) Summer Fellowship program. This program is about centering the voices of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students in design colleges and universities about what they want to see change on their campus and in the industry. Our JADE Fellows spend 9 weeks over the summer building their leadership skills, learning about various career paths, enhancing their technical and design skills, and completing a capstone project. The strength of the JADE Fellow program is the cohort of 5 Black, Latinx, and/or Indigenous students who create a strong peer group among one another – together they are the catalysts for change for one another and for our industry.
Join us at our first inaugural Designing Futures Breakfast! DesignPhiladelphia created the Designing Futures Breakfast & Award to raise critical dollars for its design education programs from K through Career and to honor individuals who have contributed greatly to design education at every scale and educational level.
We are thrilled to announce the first honoree, Dr. Andrew Phillips! Andrew knows better than most how impactful Design Education can be for young minds.
Andrew is well known to many in Philadelphia as an accomplished, respected educator and an award-winning architect. Through his work, he earned a strong reputation as an intuitive and highly successful teacher of architecture and design at both high school and university levels. Andrew is a tireless ally of marginalized communities, who has helped generations of students develop their design agency as a vehicle for empowerment and positive change.
Andrew served as Chief Innovation Officer and Director of Design Education at the Charter High School for Architecture + Design (CHAD) and, more recently, as Chair of Design at String Theory Schools. Andrew proved his leadership skills and his unique ability to empower students of all backgrounds, especially those faced with socioeconomic inequities and systemic racism. The first half of his education career, Andrew taught at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design and helped to spearhead a deep exploration into the discipline of architecture, its inquiry processes, and its representational dialogues. His interest in critical making, the affordances of design tools and techniques, the mindsets, and the means necessary for catalysts of agency and social change have been a common thread and priority throughout Andrew’s career.
