Session 1: The Science of Playful Learning

Playful Learning Landscapes is a global movement that combines placemaking with early learning. By creating environments for children that adhere to a set of research-based principles of playful learning, children are invited to playfully explore their world in ways that lead to defined learning goals. By referring to an evidence base and presenting the tools for measuring the effectiveness of environments, Science-Informed Design offers architects a form of practice in which the value of their work can be better understood by others. In this session, participants will learn about the principles of playful learning, the playful learning design process, and begin to identify how playful learning can be woven into designs.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will develop an understanding of the core principles of playful learning. This session will dive deep into the science of playful learning.
2. Participants will experience the process of playful learning design with a focus on designing for communities. Participants will have the opportunity to learn through an exploratory process in real-time, just like playful learning!
3. Participants will explore ways to incorporate the principles of playful learning into their design process. Participants engage in an interactive game while identifying the “6 C’s” of Playful Learning (Communication, Content, Critical Thinking, Creative Innovation, Confidence, Collaboration).
4. Participants will learn how to implement engaging solutions for children in regards to literacy and equity in their projects. Participants will understand new ways to frame the value of design work and how the built environment can create change.
