Urban Heat Island x Gentrification in Philadelphia
Session 3A | 1:20 - 2:20 PM
1 AIA LU (HSW)
Urban Design Committee and COTE / EJ have been collaborating on a series of talks discussing the entangled subjects of urban heat island, gentrification, and urban heat island mitigation. We began with methods for studying gentrification and urban heat island and heat vulnerable neighborhoods using GIS, Grasshopper, and Honeybee. We then learned about the downfalls of urban heat island mitigation when "green gentrifcation" is not taken into consideration and displacement ensues; our case study neighborhood was Philadelphia Chinatown. We learned about the complexities of advocating for a neighborhood like Chinatown by from local advocates. Finally, we learned about how the City of Philadelphia studies and addresses urban heat island in the most heat vulnerable and formerly redlined neighborhoods of Philadelphia. We see how Hunting Park was chosen, and a broad base of organizations, volunteers, and residents collaborated on the shared goal of improving heat island impacts in this particular neighborhood.
