This program will explore the design, fabrication and tectonics of contemporary architectural ironwork and custom metalwork in Philadelphia through back-to-back tours of two notable local fabrication studios: Holzman Iron Studio and Amuneal. Both studios draw from the rich history of metalworking and its engagement with contemporary technologies, bookending a wide range of techniques, scales and design potentials. Participants will explore each studio firsthand through guided tours by studio members and will have opportunities for discussion with the fabricators. The day will begin at Holzman Iron Studio where participants will get a unique window into contemporary blacksmithing and ironwork. Participants will then travel to Amuneal and explore architectural metal applications ranging from bespoke custom fabrication to advanced finishing techniques. Participants will need to provide their own transportation to and between studios. Lunch will be provided by Amuneal.
