Established in Philadelphia in 1984, the firm has produced a diverse body of work for clients drawn to its environmentally ethical approach and innovative design. The firm's partners are Stephen Kieran, FAIA, and James Timberlake, FAIA. The firm's principals are Richard Maimon, FAIA, and David Riz, AIA. KieranTimberlake is one of the few architecture firms to employ a full-time, trans-disciplinary research team, dedicated to the advancement of building design practices through material, system, process, and environment driven questions. Collaboration with clients, consultants, environmental and material scientists, and those outside of architectural practice is essential to KieranTimberlake’s process of making.

The design community has recognized the firm for its fusion of research with architecture, bestowing over 125 design citations, including the 2008 Architecture Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects, the highest honor given to an architectural practice for consistently producing works of distinction, and the 2010 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Architecture.
