Green, Urban, Glocal is the Center for Architecture’s annual exhibition featuring student work from Philadelphia’s five Architecture and Design schools:
Drexel University
Philadelphia University
Temple University
University of the Arts
University of Pennsylvania.
The participating schools choose a selection of student work from various design departments within their institutions, from architecture and interior design to urban planning and landscape architecture. The work on display represents projects each school thinks most clearly represents their pedagogical philosophies.
The schools collectively chose the theme of this exhibition to highlight to the public the philosophy that good architecture and design address more than pleasing aesthetics. Each of the three themes represents a current challenge to designers across departments. “Green” represents the ecological and environmental factors that need to be addressed in future designs to make them sustainable and to protect the planet. “Urban” represents the fact that for the first time in history, more people live in cities than anywhere else – a trend that will only intensify into the 21st Century and which will greatly influence the future of human culture. “Glocal” is a combination of the words “global” and “local”, and highlights the need of designers to address local concerns while taking into account global repercussions.
The opening reception and panel discussion on February 9th will feature representatives from the faculty and administration of the participating design programs discussing the state of architecture and design education, emerging trends in the industrial arts, and the role of educational programs in shaping the expectations of end-users in the 21st Century.
The Center is excited to bring these forward-thinking designs and discussions to the public’s attention and to reveal the creative work that is happening right here in Philadelphia, under the guidance of educators at our local design schools.
