Creating Healthy Communities Through Active Design

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, architects and urban reformers helped to defeat infectious diseases like cholera and tuberculosis by designing better buildings, streets, neighborhoods, clean water systems, and parks. In the 21st century, Designers again play a crucial role in combating the most rapidly growing public health epidemics of our time: Obesity and its impact on related chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. Today, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet are second only to tobacco as the main causes of premature death in the United States. A growing body of research shows that evidence-based Architectural and Urban design strategies can be designed to increase regular physical activity and healthy eating. We will introduce the LEED ID Credit: Design for Health Through Increased Physical Activity, which was developed to promote Health in LEED projects. We will discuss strategies to promote physical Activity in built environment and see how they apply to LEED NC and CI. We will also review the process this ID credit is using to achieve LEED pilot credit. There will be a discussion of case study findings from projects that have used the LEED ID Credit: Design for Health Through Increased Physical Activity to improve the health of their building users.
